‘Microsoft’ Remains (By Far) the Most Impersonated Brand in Email Scams

We all know the emails: “Dear user, please click the following link to update your credentials. Otherwise, your Office 365 account will be disabled.” “Please sign the attached document” or “Please review your payment information.” And while many of those emails look legitimate at first glance, it’s always worth taking a closer look, because more often than not emails like the above are phishing attempts. Millions of people fall for these kinds of phishing attempts, especially people who haven’t grown up using the internet. The most common cyber attacks and email scams are targeting both individuals and companies. The consequences of successful phishing attacks can be severe, ranging from loss of confidential information or intellectual property to breach of customer data or ransomware infection. Any of those outcomes can result in financial and reputational damages, which is why any organization should train its employees on the constantly evolving threat landscape. In recent years, phishing emails have become a lot more sophisticated and some of them are really hard to distinguish from legitimate emails. In many cases, such attacks involve the attacker imitating a well-known company/brand – a practice commonly known as “brand phishing” – in order to exploit the trust and familiarity that […]

OpenAI set to Unveil AI-driven challenger to Google Search

Google’s long-standing supremacy in the search engine arena may soon be challenged as OpenAI, boosted by its partnership with Microsoft, is reportedly stepping up to launch its own AI-driven search product. According to two sources familiar with the matter who spoke to Reuters, OpenAI is scheduled to unveil its AI-powered search tool on Monday. The introduction of this product coincides closely with the timing of Google’s annual I/O conference, which starts on Tuesday and is anticipated to feature several AI-related announcements. While Google remains a titan in search, it too has been adapting to incorporate AI more deeply into its functionalities. Google began trialing AI-powered search summaries in the US over a year ago and expanded testing to selected, signed-in UK users last month. The potential entry of OpenAI into the search engine market adds a new layer of competition not only for Google, but also for other entities like Perplexity. This week, Perplexity announced a partnership with SoundHound to enhance voice assistants for IoT devices with its AI-powered search capabilities. OpenAI, heavily supported by Microsoft, seems to be banking on the intersection of AI and search engine technology to carve out its niche. Microsoft previously integrated OpenAI’s AI capabilities into its Bing search […]

OpenAI takes steps to boost AI-generated content transparency

OpenAI is joining the Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity (C2PA) steering committee and will integrate the open standard’s metadata into its generative AI models to increase transparency around generated content. The C2PA standard allows digital content to be certified with metadata proving its origins, whether created entirely by AI, edited using AI tools, or captured traditionally. OpenAI has already started adding C2PA metadata to images from its latest DALL-E 3 model output in ChatGPT and the OpenAI API. The metadata will be integrated into OpenAI’s upcoming video generation model Sora when launched more broadly. “People can still create deceptive content without this information (or can remove it), but they cannot easily fake or alter this information, making it an important resource to build trust,” OpenAI explained. The move comes amid growing concerns about the potential for AI-generated content to mislead voters ahead of major elections in the US, UK, and other countries this year. Authenticating AI-created media could help combat deepfakes and other manipulated content aimed at disinformation campaigns. While technical measures help, OpenAI acknowledges that enabling content authenticity in practice requires collective action from platforms, creators, and content handlers to retain metadata for end consumers. In addition to C2PA integration, OpenAI […]

Elon Musk’s xAI To Launch Improved Version Of Grok Chatbot

Elon Musk’s artificial intelligence startup xAI said on Thursday it will launch an enhanced version of its chatbot Grok. The new version, called Grok-1.5, will be made available to early testers and existing Grok users on social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, in the coming days, said in a statement. The startup said one of the most notable improvements in the new version is its performance in coding and math-related tasks. Seeking an alternative to Microsoft-backed OpenAI and Alphabet’s Google, Musk launched xAI last year to create what he said would be a “maximum truth-seeking AI.” In December, the startup rolled out Grok for Premium+ subscribers of X. Earlier this month, Musk said xAI would open-source Grok, days after the billionaire had sued OpenAI for allegedly abandoning its original mission in favor of a for-profit model.

OpenAI Unveils Voice-cloning Tool But Delays Release On Safety Grounds

ChatGPT maker OpenAI has unveiled a voice-cloning tool but has no plans to release it yet as it tries to iron out safety concerns surrounding the latest addition to its generative artificial intelligence arsenal. The service, Voice Engine, has been in development since late 2022 – about the same time when ChatGPT was launched – and uses text input and a 15-second audio sample to generate “natural-sounding speech that closely resembles the original speaker”, California-based OpenAI said in a blog post on Friday. It is aimed at reading assistance, translation, supporting people who are non-verbal and helping patients with degenerative speech conditions recover their voice, as well as being a service to help hasten community services in remote areas, it said. Voice Engine joins OpenAI’s suite of generative AI platforms, including Dall-E for images, Sora for video and ChatGPT, which began the generative AI revolution. Early testers will be able to preview Voice Engine, with no plans to go public “at this time”, OpenAI said, in line with the company’s “approach to AI safety and our voluntary commitment”. “We are taking a cautious and informed approach to a broader release due to the potential for synthetic voice misuse. We hope […]

Text To Video: OpenAI Announces New Sora Model

Microsoft-backed OpenAI is working on software that can generate minute-long videos based on text prompts, the company said on Thursday. The software, called Sora, is currently available for red teaming, which helps identify flaws in the AI system, as well as for use by visual artists, designers and filmmakers to gain feedback on the model, the company said in a statement. “Sora is able to generate complex scenes with multiple characters, specific types of motion, and accurate details of the subject and background,” the statement said, adding that it can create multiple shots within a single video. Prompt: “A stylish woman walks down a Tokyo street filled with warm glowing neon and animated city signage. she wears a black leather jacket, a long red dress, and black boots, and carries a black purse. she wears sunglasses and red lipstick. she walks confidently and casually.… pic.twitter.com/cjIdgYFaWq — OpenAI (@OpenAI) February 15, 2024 Apart from generating videos from text prompts, Sora can animate a still image, the company said in a blog post. The video generation software follows OpenAI’s ChatGPT chatbot, which was released in late 2022 and created a buzz around GenAI with its ability to compose emails and write codes […]

Meta To Start Labelling AI-generated Deepfake Images

Meta reportedly announced that it will now start labelling AI-generated images across all of its social media networks, including Instagram, Facebook and Threads, in the coming months. The social media giant already applies the ‘Imagined with AI’ labels to images generated using its Meta AI feature, but the company now wants to label AI images generated by other big players in the industry, including Google and OpenAI. “As the difference between human and synthetic content gets blurred, people want to know where the boundary lies,” Meta’s president of global affairs Nick Clegg wrote in a blog post on Tuesday. Meta to roll out ‘Imagined with AI’ labels “So it’s important that we help people know when photorealistic content they’re seeing has been created using AI,” he added. Clegg’s post said the platform already does it by applying “Imagined with AI” labels to photorealistic images created using our Meta AI feature. “That’s why we’ve been working with industry partners to align on common technical standards that signal when a piece of content has been created using AI. Being able to detect these signals will make it possible for us to label AI-generated images that users post to Facebook, Instagram and Threads,” he said. Meta […]
