Visualizing The Training Costs Of AI Models Over Time

Training advanced AI models like OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini Ultra requires millions of dollars, with costs escalating rapidly. As computational demands increase, the expenses for the computing power necessary to train them are soaring. In response, AI companies are rethinking how they train generative AI systems. In many cases, these include strategies to reduce computational costs given current growth trajectories. As Visual Capitalist’s Dorothy Neufeld shows in the following graphic, based on analysis from Stanford University’s 2024 Artificial Intelligence Index Report, the training costs for advanced AI models has surged. How Training Cost is Determined The AI Index collaborated with research firm Epoch AI to estimate AI model training costs, which were based on cloud compute rental prices. Key factors that were analyzed include the model’s training duration, the hardware’s utilization rate, and the value of the training hardware. While many have speculated that training AI models has become increasingly costly, there is a lack of comprehensive data supporting these claims. The AI Index is one of the rare sources for these estimates. Ballooning Training Costs Below, we show the training cost of major AI models, adjusted for inflation, since 2017: Last year, OpenAI’s GPT-4 cost an estimated $78.4 million to train, a steep rise from Google’s PaLM (540B) model, […]

How Meta is addressing marketers’ generative AI concerns with new tools

Meta unveiled a set of new generative artificial intelligence (AI) features for advertisers Tuesday (May 7), including image and text generators that speed up creative production. The offerings address a demand among marketers for a greater sense of control in their AI experiments and a guarantee that the results will meet what are often specific internal brand guidelines, like ensuring the correct colors are present in ads. Striking the right balance with generative AI is important for Meta to build confidence in a technology the Instagram and WhatsApp owner believes is key to future growth but that has fallen into complex ethical and legal tangles. “Part of the answer for how to grow [generative AI] adoption is making sure it’s not just a black box but you also have the right levels of control,” said John Hegeman, vice president and head of monetization at Meta, during the Q&A portion of a presentation to reporters. “Brand guidelines are an area where brands are going to continue to have a lot of specific preferences and not want those to be violated.” Meta’s image generator at launch only spits out image variations based on assets that the advertiser submits rather than working off of text […]

OpenAI set to Unveil AI-driven challenger to Google Search

Google’s long-standing supremacy in the search engine arena may soon be challenged as OpenAI, boosted by its partnership with Microsoft, is reportedly stepping up to launch its own AI-driven search product. According to two sources familiar with the matter who spoke to Reuters, OpenAI is scheduled to unveil its AI-powered search tool on Monday. The introduction of this product coincides closely with the timing of Google’s annual I/O conference, which starts on Tuesday and is anticipated to feature several AI-related announcements. While Google remains a titan in search, it too has been adapting to incorporate AI more deeply into its functionalities. Google began trialing AI-powered search summaries in the US over a year ago and expanded testing to selected, signed-in UK users last month. The potential entry of OpenAI into the search engine market adds a new layer of competition not only for Google, but also for other entities like Perplexity. This week, Perplexity announced a partnership with SoundHound to enhance voice assistants for IoT devices with its AI-powered search capabilities. OpenAI, heavily supported by Microsoft, seems to be banking on the intersection of AI and search engine technology to carve out its niche. Microsoft previously integrated OpenAI’s AI capabilities into its Bing search […]

Will AI be your next marketing assistant?

In the ever-evolving marketing landscape, one technology emerges as the potential linchpin – Gen AI. Revered for helping businesses move further, faster, and more efficiently, does it also hold the key to a new way of creative campaigns? I recently discussed this topic and more with Rio Longacre, MD at Slalom, and Jon Williams, global head of agency business development at AWS. Gen AI: Making sense of the mania During our conversation, Longacre describes a paradigm shift in the Gen AI landscape. Moving beyond experimentation, companies are now forging strategic pathways, identifying areas where they can genuinely make a transformative difference. “Within the last few months, there’s been a big shift, which is very positive. Instead of ‘let’s just try different things’, it’s now, ‘let’s have a Gen AI strategy’. They are looking to identify areas where Generative AI could make a big difference and move the needle. They want to invest in those, whether it’s eCommerce, operations, or creative; they want to come up with ideas that could work and test them. If they work, great. They’ll look to start to commercialize them. If they don’t, that’s OK too, then they can pivot and try something else.” The future of AI […]

AI chatbots want to be factual. But can they be a credible news source?

First, it was the Browser Company’s Arc web browser, and now it is social networking platform X’s artificial intelligence (AI) tool Grok – AI platforms are now being trained to produce summaries of content on a particular site, triggering concerns over its impact on traffic to news publishers, and their potential to generate and propagate misleading content harming the online information economy. Last week, X said that its AI offering Grok will summarise events viral on the platform with news points and additional commentary around the events. The service will be available under the ‘For You’ tab in the ‘Explore’ page of the platform – and when users tap on a story, instead of using text from the article or news itself, the summary is generated based on the conversations happening on the platform. For now, this service is only available to paid users of X. While offering summaries of news events and trending topics on X is not new and was a feature under the leadership of Jack Dorset when the social network was called Twitter, this is the first time the platform will use AI to create summaries of events. Even as many fear that this could drive […]

TikTok To Automatically label AI-Generated Content

TikTok, the popular social media platform for creating and sharing short-form videos, said it will now start automatically labeling artificial intelligence (AI)-generated content (AIGC) when it is uploaded to the platform.  On May 9, the social media giant said it is partnering with the Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity (C2PA) and will be the first media-sharing platform to implement its Content Credentials technology. TikTok has already been requiring content creators to label realistic AIGC for over a year, along with anything made with its own TikTok AI effects. However, the recent development implements auto-labeling on AI-generated content created using other platforms. It said this will be done with the Content Credentials technology which attaches metadata to content that the platform can use to instantly recognize and label AIGC. The statement said the increase in auto-labeled AIGC on TikTok will be “gradual at first” as soon as Content Credential is implemented on other platforms to metadata, it will be able to label more content.  For the time being, the feature will only be available for images and videos, with the intention of bringing it to audio content in the near future. Meta To Start Labelling All AI-generated Content On Facebook, Instagram

Facebook owner Meta META.O announced major changes to its policies on digitally created and altered media on Friday, ahead of U.S. elections poised to test its ability to police deceptive content generated by new AI technologies. What gets labelled? The social media giant will start applying “Made with AI” labels in May to AI-generated videos, images, and audio posted on its platforms, expanding a policy that previously addressed only a narrow slice of doctored videos, Vice President of Content Policy Monika Bickert said in a blog post. Bickert said Meta would also apply separate and more prominent labels to digitally altered media that poses a “particularly high risk of materially deceiving the public on a matter of importance,” regardless of whether the content was created using AI or other tools. The new approach will shift the company’s treatment of manipulated content. It will move from one focused on removing a limited set of posts toward one that keeps the content up while providing viewers with information about how it was made. Meta’s scheme evolves Meta previously announced a scheme to detect images made using other companies’ generative AI tools using invisible markers built into the files but did not give a start date at the time. A […]

Google Eyes Paid AI Search Features, Explores Subscription Model; Report

Google is considering introducing premium features powered by generative artificial intelligence (AI) in its search engine. The move would mark the first time a core Google product is behind a paywall. However, the free search experience with advertisements will still be available. The tech giant is looking at a variety of options, including incorporating AI-powered search features to its premium subscription services, which already provide access to its new Gemini AI assistant in Gmail and Docs. Google mainly relies on advertising for monetization. The company already offers various plans, such as the Gemini AI assistant in Gmail and Docs. However, these subscriptions currently do not enhance the search experience. The company’s main product, Google Search, has been free since its launch in the early 2000s. However, the tech giant might be exploring different means of monetization. The report added that Google’s traditional search engine would remain free of charge and that ads would continue to appear alongside search results even for subscribers.

Elon Musk’s xAI To Launch Improved Version Of Grok Chatbot

Elon Musk’s artificial intelligence startup xAI said on Thursday it will launch an enhanced version of its chatbot Grok. The new version, called Grok-1.5, will be made available to early testers and existing Grok users on social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, in the coming days, said in a statement. The startup said one of the most notable improvements in the new version is its performance in coding and math-related tasks. Seeking an alternative to Microsoft-backed OpenAI and Alphabet’s Google, Musk launched xAI last year to create what he said would be a “maximum truth-seeking AI.” In December, the startup rolled out Grok for Premium+ subscribers of X. Earlier this month, Musk said xAI would open-source Grok, days after the billionaire had sued OpenAI for allegedly abandoning its original mission in favor of a for-profit model.

OpenAI Unveils Voice-cloning Tool But Delays Release On Safety Grounds

ChatGPT maker OpenAI has unveiled a voice-cloning tool but has no plans to release it yet as it tries to iron out safety concerns surrounding the latest addition to its generative artificial intelligence arsenal. The service, Voice Engine, has been in development since late 2022 – about the same time when ChatGPT was launched – and uses text input and a 15-second audio sample to generate “natural-sounding speech that closely resembles the original speaker”, California-based OpenAI said in a blog post on Friday. It is aimed at reading assistance, translation, supporting people who are non-verbal and helping patients with degenerative speech conditions recover their voice, as well as being a service to help hasten community services in remote areas, it said. Voice Engine joins OpenAI’s suite of generative AI platforms, including Dall-E for images, Sora for video and ChatGPT, which began the generative AI revolution. Early testers will be able to preview Voice Engine, with no plans to go public “at this time”, OpenAI said, in line with the company’s “approach to AI safety and our voluntary commitment”. “We are taking a cautious and informed approach to a broader release due to the potential for synthetic voice misuse. We hope […]
