Training advanced AI models like OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini Ultra requires millions of dollars, with costs escalating rapidly. As computational demands increase, the expenses for the computing power necessary to train them are soaring. In response, AI companies are rethinking how they train generative AI systems. In many cases, these include strategies to reduce computational costs given current growth trajectories. As Visual Capitalist’s Dorothy Neufeld shows in the following graphic, based on analysis from Stanford University’s 2024 Artificial Intelligence Index Report, the training costs for advanced AI models has surged. How Training Cost is Determined The AI Index collaborated with research firm Epoch AI to estimate AI model training costs, which were based on cloud compute rental prices. Meta unveiled a set of new generative artificial intelligence (AI) features for advertisers Tuesday (May 7), including image and text generators that speed up creative production. The offerings address a demand among marketers for a greater sense of control in their AI experiments and a guarantee that the results will meet what are often specific internal brand guidelines, like ensuring the correct colors are present in ads. First, it was the Browser Company’s Arc web browser, and now it is social networking platform X’s artificial intelligence (AI) tool Grok – AI platforms are now being trained to produce summaries of content on a particular site, triggering concerns over its impact on traffic to news publishers, and their potential to generate and propagate misleading content harming the online information economy. Last week, X said that its AI offering Grok will summarise events viral on the platform with news points and additional commentary around the events. The service will be available under the ‘For You’ tab in the ‘Explore’ page of the platform – and when users tap on a story, instead of using text from the article or news itself, the summary is generated based on the conversations happening on the platform. Meta To Start Labelling All AI-generated Content On Facebook, Instagram

Facebook owner Meta META.O announced major changes to its policies on digitally created and altered media on Friday, ahead of U.S. elections poised to test its ability to police deceptive content generated by new AI technologies. What gets labelled? The social media giant will start applying “Made with AI” labels in May to AI-generated videos, images, and audio posted on its platforms, expanding a policy that previously addressed only a narrow slice of doctored videos, Vice President of Content Policy Monika Bickert said in a blog post. Bickert said Meta would also apply separate and more prominent labels to digitally altered media that poses a “particularly high risk of materially deceiving the public on a matter of importance,” regardless of whether the content was created using AI or other tools. The new approach will shift the company’s treatment of manipulated content. Elon Musk’s xAI To Launch Improved Version Of Grok Chatbot

Elon Musk’s artificial intelligence startup xAI said on Thursday it will launch an enhanced version of its chatbot Grok. The new version, called Grok-1.5, will be made available to early testers and existing Grok users on social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, in the coming days, said in a statement. The startup said one of the most notable improvements in the new version is its performance in coding and math-related tasks. Seeking an alternative to Microsoft-backed OpenAI and Alphabet’s Google, Musk launched xAI last year to create what he said would be a “maximum truth-seeking AI.” In December, the startup rolled out Grok for Premium+ subscribers of X. Earlier this month, Musk said xAI would open-source Grok, days after the billionaire had sued OpenAI for allegedly abandoning its original mission in favor of a for-profit model.

Apple in talks with Google for using Gemini to bring generative AI features to iPhones

Apple and Google are actively negotiating the use of Gemini to power some of the generative AI features coming to iPhones this year, according to a recent report by Bloomberg’s Mark Gurnman. The deal with Apple could be a game changer for Google’s Gemini chatbot, which has been embroiled in a number of controversies in recent months. Meta reportedly announced that it will now start labelling AI-generated images across all of its social media networks, including Instagram, Facebook and Threads, in the coming months. The social media giant already applies the ‘Imagined with AI’ labels to images generated using its Meta AI feature, but the company now wants to label AI images generated by other big players in the industry, including Google and OpenAI. “As the difference between human and synthetic content gets blurred, people want to know where the boundary lies,” Meta’s president of global affairs Nick Clegg wrote in a blog post on Tuesday. Meta to roll out ‘Imagined with AI’ labels “So it’s important that we help people know when photorealistic content they’re seeing has been created using AI,” he added.
