Meta AI comes to WhatsApp, Facebook, Messenger, and Instagram in India

Meta is announcing wider availability of its generative AI chatbot, “Meta AI,” to all WhatsApp, Facebook, Messenger, and Instagram users in India today. The company had initially deployed the chatbot in April for testing with select users. Meta AI is powered by Meta’s latest Llama 3 large language model. It is currently available only in English. Meta has integrated it directly into WhatsApp group chats, so it can for instance recommend restaurants for your next outing. Meta AI is available on the web as well where it can help create a multiple-choice test for study practice, so on and so forth. Meta AI’s capabilities extend beyond WhatsApp and web. As you scroll through your Facebook Feed, Meta AI is there to enhance your experience. If you come across an intriguing post, you can ask Meta AI for more information directly from the post. One standout feature of Meta AI is its text-to-image generation, activated by using the word “imagine.” Whether in a direct interaction or a group chat, you can create and share images effortlessly. This “Imagine” feature allows you to spark creativity, enabling you to design a custom invite for your child’s birthday party or collaborate with friends to create fun, […]

Visualizing The Training Costs Of AI Models Over Time

Training advanced AI models like OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini Ultra requires millions of dollars, with costs escalating rapidly. As computational demands increase, the expenses for the computing power necessary to train them are soaring. In response, AI companies are rethinking how they train generative AI systems. In many cases, these include strategies to reduce computational costs given current growth trajectories. As Visual Capitalist’s Dorothy Neufeld shows in the following graphic, based on analysis from Stanford University’s 2024 Artificial Intelligence Index Report, the training costs for advanced AI models has surged. How Training Cost is Determined The AI Index collaborated with research firm Epoch AI to estimate AI model training costs, which were based on cloud compute rental prices. Key factors that were analyzed include the model’s training duration, the hardware’s utilization rate, and the value of the training hardware. While many have speculated that training AI models has become increasingly costly, there is a lack of comprehensive data supporting these claims. The AI Index is one of the rare sources for these estimates. Ballooning Training Costs Below, we show the training cost of major AI models, adjusted for inflation, since 2017: Last year, OpenAI’s GPT-4 cost an estimated $78.4 million to train, a steep rise from Google’s PaLM (540B) model, […]

OpenAI set to Unveil AI-driven challenger to Google Search

Google’s long-standing supremacy in the search engine arena may soon be challenged as OpenAI, boosted by its partnership with Microsoft, is reportedly stepping up to launch its own AI-driven search product. According to two sources familiar with the matter who spoke to Reuters, OpenAI is scheduled to unveil its AI-powered search tool on Monday. The introduction of this product coincides closely with the timing of Google’s annual I/O conference, which starts on Tuesday and is anticipated to feature several AI-related announcements. While Google remains a titan in search, it too has been adapting to incorporate AI more deeply into its functionalities. Google began trialing AI-powered search summaries in the US over a year ago and expanded testing to selected, signed-in UK users last month. The potential entry of OpenAI into the search engine market adds a new layer of competition not only for Google, but also for other entities like Perplexity. This week, Perplexity announced a partnership with SoundHound to enhance voice assistants for IoT devices with its AI-powered search capabilities. OpenAI, heavily supported by Microsoft, seems to be banking on the intersection of AI and search engine technology to carve out its niche. Microsoft previously integrated OpenAI’s AI capabilities into its Bing search […]

OpenAI takes steps to boost AI-generated content transparency

OpenAI is joining the Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity (C2PA) steering committee and will integrate the open standard’s metadata into its generative AI models to increase transparency around generated content. The C2PA standard allows digital content to be certified with metadata proving its origins, whether created entirely by AI, edited using AI tools, or captured traditionally. OpenAI has already started adding C2PA metadata to images from its latest DALL-E 3 model output in ChatGPT and the OpenAI API. The metadata will be integrated into OpenAI’s upcoming video generation model Sora when launched more broadly. “People can still create deceptive content without this information (or can remove it), but they cannot easily fake or alter this information, making it an important resource to build trust,” OpenAI explained. The move comes amid growing concerns about the potential for AI-generated content to mislead voters ahead of major elections in the US, UK, and other countries this year. Authenticating AI-created media could help combat deepfakes and other manipulated content aimed at disinformation campaigns. While technical measures help, OpenAI acknowledges that enabling content authenticity in practice requires collective action from platforms, creators, and content handlers to retain metadata for end consumers. In addition to C2PA integration, OpenAI […]

Elevate Customer Engagement and Loyalty: 6 Strategies for Effective Email Marketing

Email has come a long way from its early days as a blunt instrument for blasting information to a wide audience. Today, it’s more like a Swiss army knife, with a use case for almost every situation across the customer journey.  From the moment someone first encounters your brand to the ongoing relationship that follows a purchase, email is the connective tissue that binds these interactions together — if you’re using it correctly. Technological advancements drove this massive shift, changing consumer behaviors and marketers’ relentless pursuit of more effective ways to engage their audiences. Lately, there’s a new element to consider with AI, from generative AI like ChatGPT to automation tools like those built into HubSpot. So, how should you be using email now? More than ever, email serves as a way to foster one-on-one connections, provide value and build long-lasting […]

OpenAI Unveils Voice-cloning Tool But Delays Release On Safety Grounds

ChatGPT maker OpenAI has unveiled a voice-cloning tool but has no plans to release it yet as it tries to iron out safety concerns surrounding the latest addition to its generative artificial intelligence arsenal. The service, Voice Engine, has been in development since late 2022 – about the same time when ChatGPT was launched – and uses text input and a 15-second audio sample to generate “natural-sounding speech that closely resembles the original speaker”, California-based OpenAI said in a blog post on Friday. It is aimed at reading assistance, translation, supporting people who are non-verbal and helping patients with degenerative speech conditions recover their voice, as well as being a service to help hasten community services in remote areas, it said. Voice Engine joins OpenAI’s suite of generative AI platforms, including Dall-E for images, Sora for video and ChatGPT, which began the generative AI revolution. Early testers will be able to preview Voice Engine, with no plans to go public “at this time”, OpenAI said, in line with the company’s “approach to AI safety and our voluntary commitment”. “We are taking a cautious and informed approach to a broader release due to the potential for synthetic voice misuse. We hope […]
